Banggai Cardinal or Kaudern Cardinal is a very impressive and nice fish for the seawater aquarium. Banggai Cardinals are silver with black strips having also little white dots, which are visible in the dorsal, natatorial, pelvic and caudal fin. Their size can reach 3,2 inches or  8cm and their life span variates along 5 years.

Cardinal fishes are considered to be good for amateur aquarists and relatively tough, however this does not mean that they tolerate bad water conditions. They are very peaceful and well tempered fishes, which makes them excellent tankmates. However this does not apply when it comes to tankmates of the same species, as they tern to be quite aggressive towards them , especially when they form pairs. In such occasions if there is a third cardinal , the pair will try to eliminate it. Moreover when pairs are formed they will easily reproduce successfully, however it is very difficult to discriminate between males and females.

Cardinals are carnivorous and diurnal in contast to the other relative species which are nocturnal. Their feeding the first days of introduction to the aquarium may be proved difficult and probably they should be lured with frozen or even live food. Generally they need flake or shrimps as food, but the best for them would be frozen or live.

Red List Category & Criteria:

Endangered   B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v)  ver 3.1

Year Assessed:

2007

Banggai Cardinals are endemic and are found in nature only around the reefs of the so called island only and the last years are endangered by overfishing. Hence it is prudent that you buy only captive breed fishes and not wild caught because not only they are more susceptible to pathogens but their fishing is detrimental for the environment!
